Central & South West London

Having lived and worked in central and south west London for 10 years, we couldn’t think of a better corner of London to call home and raise a family. Here are some of the reasons why we love the area…

Urban villages and green spaces

The value placed upon nature and the outdoors is a standout feature of central and south west London with its numerous royal parks and commons. We also love the local sense of place, including a number of ‘urban villages’ such as Wimbledon Village, which combine a countryside feel with urban living.

From the deer in Richmond Park to the winding meanders of the River Thames, green spaces are critical to the high quality of life experienced in central and south west London. Walking in the various commons and royal parks in all four seasons are often magical, offering a sense of peace and tranquillity away from the hustle and bustle of urban London.

Central and south west London also benefits from excellent connectivity to the local and global community through tubes, buses, and trams, to road and rail links, and major international airports.

Sport and Leisure

Central and south west London is home to numerous world-famous sporting teams, notably in the world of Premier League football.

One of the areas’ most famous sporting and cultural exports is The Championships, at the home of the All England Lawn and Tennis Club, frequented by celebs, royals, and infamous for the notoriously British ‘Wimbledon queue’.

Londoners also benefit from the proximity to Twickenham stadium, and Lord’s and The Oval for high quality domestic and international sport.

The range of golf clubs and courses available to local residents is excellent, including the first-class courses on the Coombe estate. A further hidden gem is the availability of horse riding, offered in Hyde Park and further out in Wimbledon Village and the Stag Lodge Stables.

Pubs, Restaurants, and Cafés

From the well-known brands to the independents, the historical to the modern, the area has an abundance of choice and variety. Packed to the rafters during the ‘Wimbledon [tennis] Fortnight’ and consistently vibrant for the other 50 weeks of the year, we particularly love the quirky, quintessentially British pubs, the salubrious restaurants in Wimbledon Village, and the quaint cafes and tearooms. Importantly, you are also only a tube or taxi away from central London’s best culinary experiences, nightlife, and cultural attractions.

Schools

Finally, the quality and variety of schools in the area is second-to-none.

London is home to the UK’s leading independent senior schools, from Westminster, King’s College School, Wimbledon, and St Paul’s to St Paul’s Girls' School, Godolphin and Latymer, and James Allen’s Girls’ School. Furthermore, there are an excellent range of local state primary and secondary schools, as well as many magnificent Pre-Prep and Prep schools, from Norland Place, Glendower, and Sussex House to Wimbledon Common Prep School, Wetherby School, and the Thomas’s schools.

As such, it is a very competitive, oversubscribed location for school admissions, with some schools seeing as many as 10 applicants per place and others requiring registration from birth. Therefore, forward planning is essential and leaning on ESB’s expertise and knowledge of the area is critical when navigating the hyper-competitive admissions hurdles.
